Fragments of America: Gettysburg

During 1st-3rd July, 1863 the battle of Gettysburg was fought. A huge amount of soldiers were killed or severely injured. The course of the civil war turned. Three important days in the history of the United States. These are some of the photos I took there when I visited the site in February. Gettysburg has an excellent museum and a huge military park with memorials – living history. I spent around five hours there. It may sound like a substantial time, but I could easily have spent a few days walking around there since there is so much to see and give thought to. Important and fascinating.

reds in the sun

I have a bunch of nice reds – reddish purples and the sun and light made it tempting to compare them side by side in the sun. I’ve used a brush and a Lamy Safari EF on a Rhodia pad.

My current favourites are the Red-Black Black Swan (Noodler’s) that works well for letter writing and is beautiful in broad italics, the vibrant PR Plum, the likewise and special Yama Budo (Iroshizuku) and J Herbins intense and saturated 1670 (lovely in a wet, flexy nib) and the very winey Montegrappa Bordeaux. All of them are dark enough to use for journalling and letter writing.

Featured inks:

paper 1 – lighter reds top-down: Rohrer & Klingner Morinda, Iroshizuku Momiji, J Herbin Rouge Bourgogne, J Herbin Rouge Caroubier, J Herbin 1670 Hematite, Stipula Calamo Cherry Red

paper 2 – dark reds – reddish purples top-down: Diamine Monaco Red, Visconti Bordeaux, Montegrappa Bordeaux, Noodler’s Black Swan, Iroshizuku Yama Budo, Private Reserve Plum.
