These flowers with their checkered petals are quite cool. Spotted the first of the spring today. Dirty shot, but nevertheless a photo of it.

When I saw this post in my reader I thought “What the heck is a Guinea Hen Flower?”. In Britain it’s known as the Snakes Head Fritillary.
I love the variations in names that occur for the same plant (even within the UK the same plant can have different names in different areas) but thank goodness for Latin…
As for the photo – you call it dirty but the amazing thing is that the flower appears to be leaning out of the photo – it’s almost 3D!
